JourneyOfEnlightenment  > Travel > Japan2009 > Kyoto & Nara
We had a day and a half all to ourselves. No itinerary, no rush. Staying in a Ryokan, in stead of a western style hotel, is a wonderful experience.

Kyoto and Nara have so many temples (Buddhism) and shrines (Shintoism), some of them are literally inside each other. Although it has not always been this way, these two religions now co-exist peacefully and both are intergral parts of Japanese life.

JourneyOfEnlightenment > Dinner for 2, traditional Japanese style. Each is about 10 to 12 courses that are all in very small portion. Dinner and breakfast are included in a Ryokan stay.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > Dining and sleeping are in the same 6-tatami mats sized room. Best night of sleep the entire trip.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > The front of a restaurant. Our Ryokan is in Gion area in Kyoto, where very few left Maiko (apprentice) Geisha could be occasionally sighted. A couple fellows from Australia and I stood there for about an hour without seeing a single one. So I wondered around, trying hard not to get bumped around by tons of people while taking photos, a tough job when you have to hand hold for long exposure without a tripod in a very narrow and crowded street that is nothing but restaurants, tea houses and bars on a Saturday night.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > This is where the real actions are. Behind those small fronts, restaurants have decks in the back by the Kamogawa (the Duck River), fully lit and completely crowded. Apparently summer is the only season they can do this. Kamogawa runs north-south along the east edge of the city. It is full of waterfowl activities in the day time.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > Nishi (west) Hongan-ji. Together with the Higashi (east) Hongan-ji are the headquarters of the 2 factions of Jodo Shinshu, one of Japan's largest Buddhist sects. As many other temples in Japan, they have been reconstructed because of wars, earthquakes and fires. The renovation of Higashi Hongan-ji, which is immediately adjacent to the Nishi Hongan-ji, won't be completed until 2011.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > Another view of the Nishi Hongwan-ji.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > The Rokuon-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, also reconstructed.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > I shot this initially for possible future use in a background composite but like it just the way it is.
JourneyOfEnlightenment > A little not-so-subtle rest area in the Rokuon-ji.
